Finding opportunities by helping others solve difficult problems

Clinical experience, technical skills, and service

Hello, my name is Colin Meyer. I built The Beckoning Cat to share who I am, what I am learning, and some of the projects I am working on while living in Japan.

I enjoy meeting interesting people, exchanging ideas, learning new things, and taking on difficult problems. I hope something here is useful to you and, if our interests overlap, gives us a reason to connect.

I currently live in Tokyo, Japan. For the past five years, I have lived overseas, first in Singapore and now in Japan, while working on my own projects and supporting my wife’s international career.

My professional background is in nursing, particularly behavioral health and patient care. Living abroad has also given me the opportunity to develop skills in research, technology, programming, web design, data analysis, and project coordination.

Many of the projects on this site grew from things I encountered while living overseas, especially here in Japan.

Why The Beckoning Cat

The beckoning cat, or maneki neko, is the familiar Japanese cat associated with welcome, good luck, and good fortune.

I liked the name because it fits the way I try to approach life: staying open to new people, new ideas, and opportunities that sometimes come from taking on something difficult.

A lot of the best things I have done started with curiosity and saying yes before I knew exactly where something would lead. This site is where I share some of what came from that.

Purpose

The Beckoning Cat is a personal site for projects, experience, ideas, and practical resources that other people might find useful.

Some of that is aimed specifically at American military and civilian households living in Japan and the Asia Pacific, particularly people arriving under SOFA and trying to understand how everyday life overseas actually works.

Healthcare is an important part of that for me. My professional background is in nursing and behavioral health, and living in Japan has made me particularly interested in healthcare access, patient education, and the difficulties people face when trying to find appropriate care in a country where they may not speak the language.

Other parts of the site have a wider purpose.

I use this space to share technical projects, research, lessons from work and life overseas, and interests that may lead to a useful conversation, professional collaboration, or simply a new friendship.

Profile

Who

I am an American living in Japan with a background in nursing, behavioral health, research, education, and international work. Over the years I have worked in clinical settings, helped lead teams, supported research, built practical tools, and learned how to approach complicated problems through systematic approaches and outside-the-box thinking.
